Did you ever read A Confederacy of Dunces or did you just sell it?

whitelime,
While this may not be a book one can understand with "minimal effort" it's one I think everyone should be required to read prior to graduating from high school (I read this on my own, FWIW): 1984. Oh, and another one I don't know that anyone's mentioned yet: Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. |

Enders Game is my favorite book of all time. And I highly recommend any of Nelson Demille's books as well (Charm School and Lion's Game are my favorites)

For me, there is just a little too much going on in Clancy novels. But I know that this is why he appeals to many people

Interview with the Vampire
The Vampire Lestat Both by Anne Rice. I lost interest after that, but those two are readable. Edit: Also, no book recommendation thread is complete without at least one mention of Neil Stephenson. |

Enders game...never recommended to anyone who did NOT immediately make it at least top five books. Its scifi but its not too out there at all. Similar feel of Starship troopers (another great book). Most people that like it have never liked sci fi and it was also taught as part of the HS english curriculum here.
