Did you miss my earlier question or do you have reasons for not answering? If so, what are they?

These get answered roughly in order. I'd suggest not taking it personally.

The question I have, since you like your job, is what benefit you'll get out of this promotion. Will it give you the chance to work less? Will you be significantly better off financially? Will it be even more interesting?

Because you're looking at 2 year commitment to a 60-70 hour work week in order to get a position (not guaranteed) that may have the same or even more obligations.

Excellent point. The promotion will cut my hours for sure, but not to a normal 40-hour week. More like 50-55 hours. As for "better off" financially, my income would quintuple to seven figures. But I'm perfectly content with what I make now. It will not be signficantly more interesting than it is now, but it is already very interesting.

I'm not being cute when I say that your kid and your wife are the here and now and you only get to enjoy this time with them once.

[/ QUOTE ]

An even better point. Thank you.

Some advice from a son's point of view... My dad did the 60-70 hour a week plus weeks of travel every month thing when I was young. Got himself well off and then even better off. He is now worth a number that is too big for me to understand. I do somewhat wish he was there when I was 5 and 6 but I fully understand what he did. Plus the things he was able to do for the family (not buying us [censored] but the ability to travel and experience things that require money) compensates for it. If your wife understands I think a year is worth it. Think of it as starting a dynasty. Your kid will reap the benefits as will his kids, etc.

Ok, not to derail the question (which was very valid and well answered), but I'm in somewhat of a quarter-life crisis now and wondering if I'm doing what I really want to do. That begs the question, what kinds of jobs are these that see a "quintuple" in pay for a promotion and create such a net worth "too big...to understand?"

I'm guessing the first is a promotion from manager to VP or something like that, and the second one was running his own company, but I really have no idea. Care to enlighten me? What industries are these?

Also, as for the last response.... if you're taking that approach, make sure you do have as good a relationship w/ the wife and kids as the position allows. Do not just take them for granted until the kid hits his teens, or he certainly won't be as accepting of the idea as Jeebus seems to be.

I'm a lawyer. Pay at my firm (as at all big New York firms) starts at 145k right out of law school and gets to ~250k as an associate. The only promotion at my firm is to equity partner. Profits per partner at my firm exceed $2M/yr.

Dear Bison,

If you're taking antibiotics, will probiotic yoghurt counter the effects?

Dear Bison,

I have been without internet for 3 days. What is with all these gay-ass "ask <self-important idiot>..." threads? Do people really think they could offer more insight to ANY subject than a simple google search? Are they trying to be more like you? What are your thoughts on this astoundingly retarded trend and when will it end?

Looking forward to your thoughts,

d-baggery
