Moist and panties both seem insane to me, but I've definitely met several women who hate both.

P*ssy appears to be another one near universally reviled.

Maybe it's a changing of the guard, as most of the women I know are in the 24-30 range and aren't fans, to my knowledge.

Unless I'm mistaken, pretty much every American who uses it knows exactly what it means and uses it accordingly. It sounds more like you just have a low tolerance for that word and can't believe others don't.

[/ QUOTE ]

Most of my English friends would agree that if you were to choose a couple of words to throw at someone (I mean venomously, not joking around), wanker is right up there with c*nt. I have heard it used on American TV (morning and daytime shows, for example), by presenters etc that surely do not know what it means, but you couldn't possibly be mistaken could you, Blarg?

In any case, my point was that words can have completely different levels of vulgarity to different cultures or social groups, as per OP. Imagine watching daytime TV in another country and the presenters calling each other c*nts, wouldn't that surprise you?

[ QUOTE ]

If some one would call me a wanker I would laugh, it's like a sweet version of arsehole.

[/ QUOTE ]

My point exactly.

The reasons for your distaste for the word wanker intrigue me. I'm English too, and I really don't see it as an offensive word. In fact, I don't even know any old people who think of it as especially offensive - surely not a word to be thrown around in the company of the vicar, you understand, but not the sort of word that might rank in a person's top 5 offensive words list. Unless it has some special meaning about which I am unaware, of course.

I had noticed it being used in odd situations on American television though.

I was sitting at a diner one night around 2am with my friend, and these two skanky looking girls are sitting behind us. Skank 1 is telling Skank 2 some story about how her boyfriend doesn't like the words "moist" or "panties." We start snorting and chuckling in anticipation, and soon enough she lets loose with "so I asked him 'you don't like my moist panties?'" This doesn't sound too funny as I type it up, but it was hilarious at the time.

[ QUOTE ]
Some feminist movements are attempting to reclaim the word as a strong 'girl power' sort of thing. The idea is that 'c*nt' isn't something that we should be embarrassed by. The word's strong derogatory interpretation can easily be construed to strike at the essence of womanhood. 'C*nt' is attitude and pride!

[/ QUOTE ]

There's a book I've seen at Borders with the simple and tasteful title of "C*NT," all about taking back the word.

Most girls I know hate "pussy" too, fwiw.

Also I think women are more sensitive to curse words or epithets in general, like most I know would be really offended by words like "fgt" or "n*gger" in casual conversation while most guys don't really care.

[/ QUOTE ]

agree with both parts. i think using swear words unnecessarily (so not when you drop something on your foot or forgot something important, but just smattered through sentences or as adjectives) is really vulgar and implies stupidity.

i also think c*nt is a really nasty word, but i hate words like vag (pronounced vaj) and pussy, too. it makes me uncomfortable just to type them!

[/ QUOTE ]

What word do you use, then, when talking dirty with your man? Or do you just skirt the issue by never directly mentioning specifics.

Age group perhaps? I am late thirties. I am thinking of what word would you scratch onto someones car, if they raped your sister or something.

Also, ignore Blarg's jumping to conclusion - I don't have a problem with profanity, though it can sometimes make you look stupid (e.g. inability to come up with anything better to say).

Sometimes profanity is the best response: Bastard!

Ok, a search of amazon for c*nt yielded the following results:

[censored]: A Declaration of Independence
[ QUOTE ]
Book Description

An ancient title of respect for women, the word “[censored]” long ago veered off this noble path. Inga Muscio traces the road from honor to expletive, giving women the motivation and tools to claim “[censored]” as a positive and powerful force in their lives. In this fully revised edition, she explores, with candidness and humor, such traditional feminist issues as birth control, sexuality, jealousy between women, and prostitution with a fresh attitude for a new generation of women. Sending out a call for every woman to be the Cuntlovin’ Ruler of Her Sexual Universe, Muscio stands convention on its head by embracing all things [censored]-related. This edition is fully revised with updated resources, a new foreword from sexual pioneer Betty Dodson, and a new afterword by the author. “Bright, sharp, empowering, long-lasting, useful, sexy....”—San Francisco Chronicle “... [censored] provides fertile ground for psychological growth.”—San Francisco Bay Guardian “[censored] does for feminism what smoothies did for high-fiber diets—it reinvents the oft-indigestible into something sweet and delicious.”—Bust Magazine

[/ QUOTE ]

other results included:
"Sl*t! Growing Up Female with a Bad Reputation"

"Bitch: In Praise of Difficult Women"

"C*nt (spelt with the star)"

"C*nt (without the star)"

and last but certainly not least, "The Coloring Book for Big Girls."
