I use card protectors because the last time I didnt I got a nasty social disease...

This may be only relevant at home games, but you need to put something over the cards to prevent confusion, especially when there are two decks being handled around your seat. Using a chip is usually fine, but you have to be careful with that chip. If not careful, some may think you're actually betting with that chip.
