Wow, that article say's 10 mil for the winner. Is that true? That seems rediculous considering Tiger only won 7 mil for the season.

My guess is that they had to build a HUGE prize pool for this in order to give it some legitimacy and interest the players. It's not a major, it looks like something NASCAR would do (which to me is unsexy), and they needed a full field.

So no doubt their agreement with FedEx gave them relentless advertising during every event - mentioning the FedEx point standings every day, making sure to call it "The Race for the FedEx Cup" or whatever it is, etc. etc. Just whoring the crap out of FedEx. In exchange FedEx gives the Tour the shitton of moneys needed to pay the players.

All this is my take anyway, not anything I've read anywhere so it could be way off.

I thought they admitted directly basing it off of the NASCAR race-for-the-cup thingy.

Apparently it is annuity money and there is some debate how to even pay the caddies, since the players won't be seeing the money right away. So I have read in a couple places. The whole thing is sort of funny.

Isn't that how sponsorships are supposed to work?

And I'm sure the sponsors and venues of the "playoff" events ponied something back to FedEx somehow. But RedEx does seem clearly invested in this, and despite its Nascar mimicry, it's probably a good move. The Super Bowl happened with the same kind of idea- imagine if some corporation had bought the 20-year sponsorship rights to that game back in 1967.

That said, I love Tiger's move too, from a business standpoint. It tells Fedex "Look, I crap bigger than your Cup, so you might want to think about making a deal with me personally, or else I'll sink the whole thing" but he also nominally respects the championship in case it does take off.

I'm praying for some John Rollins type to get hot with four straight finishes between 5th & 10th and steal the thing, while Tiger & Phil really don't mind if they sit this one out...

That said, I'll stick with my prediction from the beginning of the season that Vijay has to be the strong favorite with this format.

The other strong favorite is of course: pass-1st-pass-1st = "*yaWn* Excuse me, was up late w/the baby, make out the annuity checks to the Tiger Woods Foundation, pleazzzzZZZzz *snore*"

I predict Phil goes 40th-pass-pass-DNQ.

Has anyone seen a link that spells out the exact distribution of points for each "playoff" event? All I can find is that each event is worth 50K points with 9K to the winner - and the last event in Atlanta has 10,300 to the winner. I want to simulate some outcomes.

I kind of get it.........but still not really at all.

anyone want to explain it better than the pga tour does? b/c omg.

Well, Mike Weir....here s how it works.....after today's poor round, Mike, tommorow is you last day. Just kiding..sorta.
I was disaponted Mike didn't play well today, but those two bogeys on 17 and 18 yesterday were huge.

As others have said it's all on the pgatour.com website. In fact, it looks more like the Fedex website now...

At first I thought that the paloff point system was too penal for the guys on the back-end, but nowI am Ok with it on the back end. I think it proves that you need to build up points during the year, as they are VERY important. You can play very good (see Rich Beem) and still not advance with a 3rd place finish.

The flaw that is becoming apparent though, is that if you are in the top 10 in fedex points going into the playoff, you can skip a tourney or miss 3 cuts and you will still play in the 4th of 4 events , even though they only take the top 30.

So, with the same format next year, the 1st and 2nd event will still not be as important for the top 10 or so players, so you may see even more people than Tiger skipping the first one next year.

its okay i tee off in like 6 hours, but im pretty sure im going to shoot <64 today. I will be top 5 and move on to next week. I don't want to win the douche bag championship anyway, i will leave that honor to Arron Oberholser or Tiger Woods.
