[ QUOTE ]
This is so stupid, if Steroids = a free 756 homeruns, why is bonds so much better than everybody else? its not a big deal, he takes steroids big deal, everybody knew and nobody cared until he got close to the record. He takes steroids and hes 10x better than the avg player who takes steroids. [/ QUOTE ] If you set out to make an incredibly retarded stereotypical pro-Bonds response that could be easily ridiculed, then congratulations - your post was a smashing success. |

Pudge, That's not entirely inaccurate, but if we're really willing to forgive steroid use because a person is likable then please explain Mark McGwire to us. [/ QUOTE ] McGwire and Sosa didn't really get hated until they went to Congress where they appeared weak and cowardly. Nobody cared about McGwire when they found andro. Nobody cared about Sosa when he corked his bat. I realize they were both biggish stories, but they faded away and the media wasn't not nearly as indignant when the stories broke. [ QUOTE ] The biggest tragedy of sports writing is that there is an audience for semi-literate morons to write indignant columns about tragedy and muse about society's collective loss of innocence. [/ QUOTE ] This is really good. |

Holy crap,
I'm watching Baseball Tonight and Erin Andrews has an interview with Bonds. In it, he has: 1) Smiled. A lot. 2) Thanks his TEAMMATES. 3) Thanked fans in SF especially, but also around MLB, pointing out respect from SD fans. 4) Put together quite a few eloquent sentences in a row. In other words, I'm shocked. This isn't Barry Bonds. This is someone who LOOKS like Barry Bonds, but isn't ACTING like Barry Bonds. I'm at a loss for words. Also, Aaron's statements on the video were class all the way. Bonds says Selig called him and congratulated him, which is also very nice. I still can't stand the guy overall, but I'm glad I got to see history made tonight, and see him finally stop acting like an ass in public. |

[ QUOTE ] Jayson Stark: "What we've lost" The biggest tragedy of the steroids era is that it has robbed us of the magic -- the magic of the greatest numbers in sports. [/ QUOTE ] The biggest tragedy of sports writing is that there is an audience for semi-literate morons to write indignant columns about tragedy and muse about society's collective loss of innocence. The above quoted sentence is the only sentence of the provided excerpt that I read -- and I have an absurd sense of pride in that fact. There is nothing he can say from there that I am interested in. If I ever read one of his columns in the future it will be because Jayson Stark is not worthy of me to remember to avoid him. [ QUOTE ]
The thing about steroid use is nobody really cares. People dislike Bonds because he is a dick and than add that steroid use on to the case against Bonds. If people really cared about steroid use than people who have tested positive for steroids in the past would get crucified instead people are indifferent towards them because they don't act like dicks to the media. Two good articles on it IMO http://www.blogmaverick.com/ http://dugout.progressiveboink.com/archive/b755.html Jayson Starks article appears to be a typical "Everything used to be so much better 20 years ago article" [/ QUOTE ] QFT |

This is going to sound really weird coming from me, since I have been (and still am) a pretty firm believer that Bonds has used steroids...
One reporter just asked Bonds if he thinks this record is tainted. Right, like Barry is going to say "You know, I think now that I've done it, its time I let you guys in on a bit of a secret..." For what its worth, that's the only guy I've heard talk about steroids in this press conference. What I'm also noticing is that Barry is handling himself with a TREMENDOUS amount of class throughout this conference. I am simply in shock. If he could've found a way to act throughout his entire career the way he's handled himself tonight, he might actually be liked by a majority of fans outside of SF.... He doesn't even want the ball from the fan. If this is all a line of BS he's feeding us...wow. |

[/ QUOTE ] It's way too hard to do this when you're constantly surrounded by media asshats. He has to work hard enough at baseball already, he doesn't have anymore energy to expend humoring a bunch of crappy journalists who couldn't care less about Barry Bonds besides what they can get for their story. |

[/ QUOTE ] It's amazing what you can see with your own two eyes instead of relying on what a sportswriter tells you to think in his column the next morning. If you're just now noticing this, you've missed several press conferences very similar to it for the past 5+ years. Keep your own experiences tonight in mind tomorrow when you inevitably read a completely different account of the same events you witnessed...I can almost envision it... "the grumpy Bonds cut-off his questioner mid-sentence and issued a curt response, showing a general disdain in giving anyone his precious time in answering questions." That's one of the reasons Barry started taping all his pressers, and they've all been out there for you to realize this long before now. |
