Takashi Shimura's performance in this film is heartbreaking. I was going to nominate Wild Strawberries but this is a good choice too. Both have similar themes.

Victor Sjostrom's acting is almost as good as Shimura's (though Sjostrom had been retired from acting for quite some time and had become a reclusive drunk) but Kurosawa must get the nod.

Bibi Andersson is perfect in Wild Strawberries though. She understood her role so well and plays it beautifully. The name of the lead Japanese actress who plays the young woman from Shimura's office escapes me, but she is just as dope.

Definately saddest book I have ever read but movie, ehhh.

Movies - City of Angels, Brians Song, Edward Scissorhands, Pay It Forward, The Elephant Man to name a few
