Just to clarify, is this thread about relatively unknown songs to check out or just anything in general? Seeing replies with international megahits like Free Bird and Yesterday just make me think, "Yeah, no [censored]."

I don't have the answer, but since I'm the one that mentioned "Yesterday", I can back it up by saying I think it's one of the best melodies ever written and warrants inclusion on this list. If the thread is about unknown songs/compositions then I'd remove it, but this thread would probably be less fun and full of songs that a lot of people:

1 - would still know even if you think it's a secret
2 - would not know but think is sh*t music

With that said, I would love to be introduced to a great song that I've never heard.

Just discovered: Queen Bee by Taj Mahal. Puts me in mind of Into the Mystic and Tupelo Honey by Van Morrison, which should also make the list.

You guys (OP included) are just listing your favorite songs. When I saw this thread title I was thinking of absolutely classic songs that everyone should be forced to hear at least once in their life. Granted, technically a lot of songs could qualify because there is very little to lose in having to listen to a song, but its my intuition that the songs in this thread should be extremely, extremely good. Like one in a million or something. Very few of the songs mentioned in this thread qualify and I'll have to retract my suggestion of Refused - New Noise in light of my new qualifications.

Another quick note: I hate that rendition of Pachelbel's Canon

I stand by my recommendations of Cantus (in memory of benjamin britten) and Summa. FWIW I think Part (umlaut over the a, pronounced [pear]t) is the most brilliant composer I've ever heard.

Cantus: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e348n660zrA
Summa: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/s...toryId=5495725 (I don't like this version, a much better one can be purchased on itunes as part of the sanctuary CD)

if you like my suggestions you can look forward to a thread I will make soon on contemporary music. In it I hope to discuss Part, Reich, Takemitsu, and a whole bunch of others.

Well yeah, I think Yesterday easily deserves to be included, I just felt like a lot of the suggestions were so obvious/famous that everyone already has heard them. Not picking on you in particular, as a lot of people posted some of the most famous songs ever written.

That said, this thread got me to do something I've been meaning to do for a while -- listen to Sigur Ros. Man they're good.

I might put in a little research of my song library and add my two cents to this tomorrow.
