I think it's a strange exercise though because I don't think there is much music that is sufficiently universal. If I were going to throw out one modern song off the top of my head, I might go with Roygbiv by Boards of Canada. So joyous. Erik Satie's Gnossienne #5 is wistful, melancholy and gorgeous, but I think a good recording is key. I heard one a long time ago that made me love the piece, but the recording I got since then really doesn't hold a candle to it.

I feel like there are a lot of good answers to this. For people who never got into rock, there are some songs like Achilles Last Stand which are just amazing. Then there are some Dylan songs that still get me 1000 listens later. Something I've recently discovered (and I believe Raptor's brought up in here) is Jazz. You simply can't say this isn't amazing:
