First time going to vegas. Questions about hotels on the strip...

Venetian looks to be at least 100 dollars more a night and I don't know if my friends are going to be up for that. As for Caesar's, is it about on the level of MGM? Also, how much would a cab be from say MGM to the north strip? I'm just trying to get an idea. Thanks for the replies so far.
