I think it only means that the Indians will be allowed to upgrade their slot machines to what the Broward parimutuels now have.

I think that is a given - they want more.

Do you read into this that they're going to get more?

It's incremental -- they're looking for more & better slots now.
The rest seems like a matter of time to me -- but not the end of the year. |

The Seminoles have already taken the steps to petition for full Class III gambling based on the fact that Class III slot machines have been allowed into Broward pari-mutuel facilities. The Seminoles want to press the fact that Class III gambling is Class III gambling, which could open the doors for full table games as allowed by the Federal Indian Gaming Commission. There's no distinction in the Indian gaming laws that separate Class III slots from Class III table games.
This has been an issue for some time now and it's just recently that it became public knowledge. In the past the governor had nearly let the timeframe pass where the tribe was willing to negotiate. I'd fathom a guess that the inability of the Senate to produce some form of tax relief has spurred this discussion. Had the state been able to find a way to offer property tax relief I highly doubt that the governor would be entering into these discussions. |

Full casino gambling would really rock South Florida. It would probably also kill Atlantic City. But I don't know if it would be so good for our area.
I say Crist kills it. |

[/ QUOTE ] Crist doesn't have the authority to kill it. He can either negotiate a cut for the state or risk getting nothing from them. As was stated above, the federal laws which dictate Indiam Gaming say the tribe is entitled to any form of gaming allowed in the state. The state now allows Class 3 gaming in Broward, and there is no distinction in the language of those laws which seperates slots from the others. They will get it, the only thing Crist can do now is get the state a cut imo. |

This is correct. If Crist hadn't expressed interest to negotiate with the tribe on behalf of the State the result would be the same, only the revenue would benefit the Dept. of the Interior.
His constituents obviously call on him to keep his word to halt the growth of gambling in the state. What they fail to realize is that Crist is powerless in this. A federal magistrate will determine the outcome here and there's nothing that Crist can do except try and get some sort of benefit for the state out of it. The tribe may not even get approval for the games, but in the event they do it would be horrible for Crist to pass up an opportunity for the state to benefit from it. |
