He's got severe depression, just like his Dad. The power and the violence were brief antidote to the depression, but he's still got enough humanity left to see that the beating of the biker was wrong, and to question the necessity of all the violence.
Could he question the validity of his father's lifestyle?
As evidenced by AJ's inept attempt on Junior's life, he doesn't exactly think things through. Could AJ do something really dumb?

I will be incredibly shocked and disappointed if AJ ends up killing someone. It doesn't seem to be in his nature and seems like it would just be sloppy writing for the sake of wrapping everything up in a neat little package.

If AJ kills anyone, it'll probably be himself. I don't think AJ is going to play much of a roll in everyone else's story, other than Carm being worried about him. I think the show will end with AJ just being the immature, emotional wreck he already is.
