If you're just talking about keeping stats, then I don't think keeping physical notes is necessary. There's free utilities online where you can keep your stats up to date. I think CardPlayer has one, for example. In my case, I just wrote a program myself to keep track of everything I needed.

If you're talking about taking notes on the play of opponents you see regularly, then I definitely think there's a place for that. Being aware of the weaknesses and leaks of bad regulars is very valuable knowledge.
