please understand I am trying to help you. THe BEST thing is for you to lose every scrap of that 14k. As your last $1 chip is being dragged in by some old fart at a commerce 3-6 table remember your initial question and ask it then. You might be ready to here the answer. [/ QUOTE ] Not everyone needs to learn their lessons the hard way...A lot of players on this board have learned the lessons already, and can help new players to avoid the pitfalls that most people fall into. After I learned my lessons, I realized that if I had listened to what I had been taught, I could've avoided it all |

I would invest 13000 of it, start off 500 as your initial bankroll, grinding it out at the low limits (.5/1), learning the game, and becoming a winning player. Keep the last 500 in as a reserve in case your first 500 goes bust. Always play with a bonus early on and build a bankroll. Move up as your skills/bankroll increases. Starting out at 5/10 or 2/4 NL is a recipe for disaster. Start small and gain the skills necessary to win.

poker takes time to learn. you are not going to be a winning player for a long time. and you have no idea if you have ability. read, play for free, or micro limits, and use the 14K for school. then in a few years when you have some understanding of the game, you can begin to move up - while you keep your real job.

You will want more than books. You will also need to purchase some of the necessary software tools for online poker. You will need to be able to track your money, analyze your play, analyze others play, find your weaknesses, and improve.
Pokertracker for anything. Various others for SnG's, charting tools, etc. Read the software forum for details. The books mentioned are all very good and you've found the best online source for info. Browse all the forums whenever you get a chance and pick the type of game you're most comfortable playing. |

Call Edward Jones and tell them that you have 14K to invest in something that pays an income. Read, play freerolls, home games, read some more, and when you get your $52 check...deposit it and start playing what your bank roll will let you play.

i would go out and find a local free poker league here in texas we have Barpoker, id play some nano limit poker anything that will get you playing cards without a lot to loose. If you want books to start with id pick up Poker Essay 1-3, these should help with getting started, since u want to go with holdem id pick up Ed Millers book and SSHE, and work from their, since you will likely not begin as a winning player rakeback deals and bonus will be a good idea, and well if your starting out in the lower limits they will dwarf your initial winrate. Personally id spend enough time playing before deciding to invest the time it will take to become an educated and winning player. Best of luck, hope your poker education doesn't cost you too much

No ones reading this properly. This kid (im 20 myself so i use this term loosely) has either been very successful already at something or has rich parents.
Either way he must have much more money than 14k and has split the 14k off as 'gambling money'. However what the others are saying is true, u must beat the lower level games first before moving up. Put $13k in a bank and play with $500 BR at $0.5/1. $500 should be for PT, books, and other software. Play 1 month, and see how you do, hopefully logging at least 10k hands. There are online schools where they charge like $40/hr(i've never tried, cant afford it)and a pro watches you play and gives advice etc; maybe it would be worthwhile doing this for a month. Then buy more books, reread your other ones, and then log 20k hands at say LHE 1/2. His BR means that he can afford to pay for things that will shorten his learning curve, like PT. I've heard many stories of people playing years grinding up from $20 or something, OP can just cut all this out. In terms of books to start= ToP, SSE, HoH1, HoH2 and Middle Limit Holdem by Ciaffone. I heard Jones' book has some flaws to it and personally i didnt really like Hilger's book. Then again i play NLHE cash pretty much exclusively so take my opinions with a serious pinch of salt. Certainly OP should be nowhere near the 5/10 LHE and up within his first 4-5 months of play, regardless of BR. |
