I'm sure I'll get banned from the El D forum for this, but I think this thread is example # 38242983492 of the big man getting his knob schlobbed on in situations where he is not that knowledgeable. His first few posts in this thread were horrible, and would have been ripped had they been anyone else's.

My gf and I got sushi for dinner last night, pick-up (obv not the way to do this right). I wrote down a list of what I wanted to get, so I could take a picture and eat everything. She informed me that it was not a reasonable amount of food to order, and so we cut back. I ate only 4.5 rolls, totally unremarkable. Hopefully next time we have sushi it will be out of the house so I can just keep ordering more.
Sorry to bore you with the bad beat, but the sushi was very good. |

I looked over the thread pretty quickly and see nothing remarkable at all about any of the top posts. Which part in particular ws anything he wasn't knowledgeable about? The part where he implied an eating contest was a contest to see who can eat the most? The part where he listed common sushi restaurant foods and their relative sizes? (fwiw I think in general 1 gyoza is usually smaller and lighter than 1 piece.) Or the part where he lists a few good sushi places? |

If anyone in Baltimore wants to get together and give this a shot, I know a couple fairly decent AYCE sushi places. [/ QUOTE ] Hey mia...I would be in for this if I'm free. Which places you have in mind? Oh, I'm way past my prime in "all you can eat" contests. Back in college I would be able to eat 75 or so pieces, but those days are long gone. If I hit 20 or 25, I'll be surprised. But I love sushi. |

[ QUOTE ] pj, OK, let me ask a question for clarification. Are you wondering if the object of a sushi eating competition is to eat the most sushi? [/ QUOTE ] can you possibly sound more pretentious in that post? [/ QUOTE ] could PJ have been any more obtuse? unless he was levelling el d knowing he'd act all pretentious then BRILLIANT! Barron |

nah, f-Todai. I meant places like sushi on tropicana or sushi factory where you sit at the bar (or a table, but the service is better at the bar) and order like normal. it's about 25 bucks or so and ayce.

the place to do this is in vancouver at Shabusen. Just went there for like the 15th time this weekend (before heading up to whistler). All you can eat sushi (sashimi + nigiri + rolls), japanese food (gyoza, tempura, agedashi tofu, etc, etc), and korean bbq (beef, shortribs, spicy pork, spicy mutton, etc) ... all this for $20 canadian.
we've never actually counted how much we ordered before, but it was probably around 400-500 pieces of sushi between the 8 of us (2 girls) |

If we are suggesting locales for said competition, a good choice might be where the first ever competitive sushi-eating event occured, and where the AYCE sushi restaurant concept got started, back in the mid-80's: Reno, NV.
I once authored dining reviews for Nevada Magazine, and reviewed every sushi restaurant in Northern Nevada (40+) for a feature article in that mag. The article never ran (the life of a freelancer lol), but I still have all my research notes. Anyway, Reno would be as good a road trip destination as any, with all the other benefits of a gambling town available as well. "Food for thought". BTW, I believe I'd give anyone in this thread a run for their money in terms of mass consumption of sushi. Thank heavens I live in an AYCE town lol. |
