[ QUOTE ] I think an East Coast vs West Coast would be kind of neat. [/ QUOTE ] We're going to need a team Euro as well. I've done ~70 nigiri and 150 pieces of maki before and think I could hold my own here if I was actually going for a competition. [/ QUOTE ] what is your weight/hight? I find this hard to believe. Unless your are trained. I would imagine I can eat either: 23 nigiri 41 rolls 18 nigiri + 15 rolls |

BTW, any penalty for eating at Todai*? It easily takes 3 of their nigiri to equal one at a "normal" sushi place, plus you can pay $20 and sit for 5 hours.
OTOH, any rule clarifications won't matter anyway, so let's just eat up first and sort it out later. Anyone who's only eating sushi (and related condiments) for the contest shouldn't be eating sushi. Not that I have a hope in hell of winning - I'm among world-class trenchermen** here. *Todai = chain of awl-U-kin-et sushi joints. **Trenchermen = person devoted to eating and drinking, often to excess. Many of the weirder Guinness eating records were set by guys describing themselves as trenchermen. |

I,
No, that is fine. The way I envision this is that let's say some folks dominate at Todai. OK, then others can go to Todai and outdo them. Multi-staged contest. OK SOMEONE GO EAT A BOATLOAD OF SUSHI AND REPORT BACK, THX! |

can this be done on the honor system at an all you can eat buffet or would i have to get a picture of the check?
if i go with joetall will one witness be enough? id like to help out the west coast team. thanks, fuji edit: oh and my friend and i have done this before. we used a different scoring system though using one piece of the california roll or a spicy tuna roll as the base measuring unit instead of nigiri. it would probably be confusing to change anything so i will just keep track of how many pieces of what i eat and then post those numbers. the forum can decide how many units of sushi they will count for. |

I'm down for the Asian team.
There's a place in Shinsaibashi with a conveyer belt and all you can eat sushi for about 1500 Yen. I disgraced myself with how little I ate last time, so I need to go back and restore my family's honor. |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I'm in. There are decent all you can eat sushi places in socal - obviously not the best ever, but most cost efficient for something like this. Runs around $20 for all you can eat - less for lunch. [/ QUOTE ] are you still in SD, I will be on your team! [/ QUOTE ] Dudes, Sushi on the Rocks in La Jolla has a $20 all you can eat deal. Some of the best sushi in San Diego. Holla! [/ QUOTE ] this could be alot of fun. if youre allowed to get high before eating i think i could put away a lot of sushi. if we are allowed a smoke break i think i could probably work on 50+. i also will snort lines of wasabi for money. [/ QUOTE ] I would like to come to the San Diego event and bring mike l. who will clearly win. -DeathDonkey |

If anyone in Baltimore wants to get together and give this a shot, I know a couple fairly decent AYCE sushi places.

Strangley enough I had a sushi eating - one on one - contest yesterday.
It was at Funayama Japanese Restaurant in NYC (24 Greenwich Avenue - between 10th St & Charles St) $30 per person including tax and tip - AYCE deal on Mondays and Thursdays. I managed 27 pieces of Nigiri and 6 rolls. Which I took credit for the equivalent of 39 pieces of Nigiri. Pieces here are large (approx 4" for nigiri) while the rolls were standard size. We had set a flat exchange rate of 2 pieces of Nigiri per roll - regardless of what type. My sole opponent only managed the equivalent of 17 pieces so I did not push it. Mason's claim of 70 pieces of nigiri alone seems way out of reach for me. I'm guessing I can get ~50 down when I am pushing it hard. |
