League: Standard 5x5 roto keeper league. 11 teams, $260 payroll.
Proposed trade to me. I get: Chien-ming Wang SP NYY $10 He gets Jhonny Peralta SS CLE $10 Through same basic research, Wang seems to have more value for his contract, but that doesn't take into account that he'll be out for a month or more. The draft is next week and the only pitchers I'll have on the roster are Brandon McCarthy and Jeremy Sowers. If I trade Peralta, I'll have to pick up someone in the draft as well. |

PLEASE INCLUDE ANY ADVICE [/ QUOTE ] 1. you get an A for approach thus far, and you selected some good hitters who will play well in this league (though i take mauer over tejada every day of the week), but i'm not a big fan of the SP you took, such as verlander over schilling. 2. alex gordon is one sleeper with big BA/OBP potential. dave roberts should be a good value but may not fit into your already steals-heavy lineup, forcing a trade. helton is another guy who benefits from the setup. 3. assuming weekly transactions, keep the focus strictly on hitters and SP; you may even want to draft a RP-eligible guy like wainwright for your RP spot to rack up more innings. with daily, you can afford to take a few closers. keep the hitting focus on guys who are up in the batting order to provide H and OBP. |

ok. in a 12 team roto league, 6x6 that added holds. mentioned above. (ERA W SV K WHIP HD). how far up do i move really good setup men like linebrink, shields, etc? there are a lot of guys who are projected to be way up there in holds who are probably not even drafted in a lot of leagues... should i wait to see if people are overdrafting for holds or start taking elite setup guys early and try to take advantage of this category? also seem to be some great 'sleeper' guys for holds with good K, WHIP, and ERA projections, like Qualls, Duscherer, Rodney, Meredith, Neshek, etc.
this is my first fantasy draft ever tonight so any advice on in-draft strategy, analyzing how others are picking, and where to place setup men in this format would be a big help. |

[/ QUOTE ] move them up a lot. in a vacuum, a hold is more valuable than a save since there will be fewer of them in your league. in practice, unless your opponents are playing well, holds will be less heavily contested than saves, and the top holds guys will last much logner than elite closers. this reduces the marginal gain from adding another top holds guy when you already have a few. (the same reason you don't draft four closers in a 16-teamer unless you intend to trade one.) |

I knew I forgot something in my league description. If it's close I'll probably just pass on the trade. |

when adding OPS to a league, is it safe to say that '5-tool' guys like a-rod, utley, soriano, etc become even more valuable? i.e. take them over a pure slugger if it's close since having pure speed guys in the lineup is more of a drain on OPS?
basically i am thinking my major adjustments when adding OPS and holds are -pure speed guys like figgins, roberts drop a lot -5-tool guys and 20/20 types go up -closers go down, setup guys go up but beware overpaying as holds will probably not be too tough to come by in the form of late bloomers, callups, etc due to the nature of the bullpen -am planning to emphasize offense early even more than usual -not counting IP means high K/9, low WHIP relievers go up even more, hence starting pitching also goes down somewhat -power and OPS at the offensively weak positions becomes more valuable for similar reasons that five-tool guys go up in value - so 2B like Kent and Ray Durham, among the highest projected OPS in the league, go up anything i'm missing? draft in 1.5 hours... thanks! |
