im really surprised that Tubby did this so fast because Michigan was reportedly interested in him as well as many other coaches. not sure if Michigan would of ended up choosing him or not, but it does tell me that the Mich job is not that highly regarded if Tubby 'insta' takes the job at Minny without even talking to Mich.

[/ QUOTE ]

How many other D1 programs are there in MN? Compare that to the Michigan job where you have to deal with Izzo and MSU who have ruled that state for several years.

Now put yourself in Tubby's head. Seems like a pretty easy decision to me.

# of recruits interested in Michigan >>>> Minnesota

Detroit area > Minneapolis
Michigan is closer to Chicago recruiting area
Michigan past >>> Minnesota
the final fours that didn't happen did in everyone's mind (2 for Michigan v 1 for Minnesota) not to mention the '89 national title for Michigan
Michigan image >>> Minnesota
sure, it's football based mainly. But, bball image is still huge. This school has everyone take notice.

The fact that people still talk about Michigan like it's a major basketball program despite over a decade absence from the tournament tells you all you need to know about Michigan relative to Minny.

This angers me so much.

I have news for you Kentucky fans. YOUR JOB IS NOT HALF OF WHAT YOU THINK IT IS.

I was so pissed off the other night when I was driving home late, listening to ESPN Radio, and the guy on the air was saying they needed to fire Tubby. He said they needed to do it because KENTUCKY is in the "elite" group of college teams...and deserved better.

Kentucky is not North Carolina. They are not Duke. They are not Kansas. They are a very solid D1 program, along the same lines as Texas, UCLA, Florida, etc. This guy won you a freaking NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, took you to the dance every single year, and you think you deserve more.

Well good luck. Your not in a recruiting hot bed. Your team doesn't have half the luster you think it does. Bah. *off soapbox*

Clark,
I agree Mich is not a big time programs anymore. NCAA sanctions will destroy a program very quickly. However, the programs is now clean, they were 'supposed' to have 2 very highly touted recruits coming in next year, so things are looking to be on the rise. We still have issues about our facilities etc... But, like I said Tubby taking the Minn. job so fast is still kinda shocking to me. I'm not even sure I want him in Ann Arbor, but still kinda puts things in perspective for me as a Mich fan.

I don't think that is the reason why. As hard as it is for us Mich fans to say it, we just are not a big time program in basketball. Recent struggles aside, Michigan was one of the premier programs in the Big Ten, if not the country. But now the reality is we don't pay coaches well and our facilities suck. Hence, this is why a guys like Tubby makes an 'insta' decision to go to Minny.

[/ QUOTE ]

Look, I know Michigan is a football school and that you guys haven't made the ncaa tourney in what, like 10 years?

But Minnesota is a hockey school, no? And the bball expectations seem to be higher at Michigan than Minnesota, at least that's how I perceive them (I could be wrong).

By going to Minnesota, Tubby's taking over a program that has nowhere to go but up, and he doesn't have to deal with instantaneous and constant comparisons to a much more successful instate school.

At this point, it's definitely a less stressful job, and obviously Minnesota made a big push for him and made him feel wanted, something Kentucky hasn't made him feel in several years.

Please.

Elite Programs
UNC, KU, UK, Duke, UCLA

Next Tier
Whole bunches of teams.

UK is inarguably a top 4 job/program (ahead of UCLA because of limits on pay).
