FF3 on snes. dont get the ports to PS1 they take forever on loads. cartriges 4tw as far as old school rpgs go. chrono trigger is also awesome. get both, ull enjoy it.

QFMFT - FF3 is far and away the best game ever. Just make sure you don't leave the ninja behind (Shadow???).

Chrono trigger is sick as well, but not quite on the level of FF3.

Front Mission for the Japanese SNES was also dope, though it was a tactics / RPG. Great game that should at least be mentioned.

basically. you fight a boss on a floating landmass and you want to wait for the time to countdown, than you can get shadow back (you have to fight him at the Coliseum)

Not played too many RPG's, don't really like the genre, but you could do a lot worse than Chrono Trigger (the SNES version) or Earthbound.

While you probably can't deal with the dated graphics and interface, the D&D Gold Box games for PC were pretty incredible for their time.

I'm not entirely sure it counts as an RPG, but ActRaiser for the SNES (made by Enix, before Square bought them out) is one of the best five games on that system. And certainly the best SNES game that no one played.
