Rats.
My wife keeps pet rats. She has 5 of them. Not bad for pets. They require little maintenance, seem genuinely interested in us, they're affectionate, and she has them trained to do little tricks which they seem pleased to perform (easy OOT, they're innocent tricks). They also respond to their names, which is kind of interesting. They are her pets, which means it's my job to clean the [censored] out of their cage once a week. I also have a dozen wood baseball bats in my basement - my order for the upcoming season.
