Is it possible to use your visa for, say, 2 month trips w/a return to the US for a week or so, followed up by another 2 month BA trip, yet another trip back home, etc. Or will this be a problem?

Be careful doing this wrt your US tax exemption, though. The first year he was down there, a buddy of mine came back to the States for 39 days and was almost burned into having to pay full US taxes. Make sure you're not in the country more than you're allowed to when claiming your $80k exemption.

If he was in the states for 39 days he was supposed to pay full taxes. Hope he doesn't get audited. You have to be in a foreign country for 330 out of 365 days.

By the way, who is your friend? Does he still live here?
