Since this got bumped I'll add that a friend and I, neither of whom drink much scotch, had some of the Balvenie Doublewood 12, and both loved it. I've got a bottle of the Macallan 12 as well, and I definitely liked the Balvenie better.

KBZ,

I've had the regular Glenmorangie (10?) and the Sherry and Port Wood finishes (12?), but never the 15. I find Glenmorangie to be nice and smooth, but doesn't quite have the depth of flavor of some comparables like Macallan, Highland Park, etc. I suspect the 15 will probably be a little more complex with more flavor and should be great.

I know I've been a little lax with this thread, so I'll be sure to drink some scotch on NYE for a new review or two. If there are any on my top list you'd like a review of, let me know.

Also, gonna add a bunch of new bourbons here in the next couple of weeks.

Have you ever tried Michael Collins? It's an Irish Whisky that was recommended quite favorably by a couple friends. I wouldn't mind hearing what you have to say about it.

troy,

I haven't had the Michael Collins. Do you know if your friends had the blend or the single malt?

Looks like the blend is around $25-30, so it is probably comparable to stuff like Bushmill's or Jameson.

One of the ones I have listed in my OP (murray mcdavid cooley 12) is from the same distillery and is excellent. I'll give that another taste and write up a full review.

I've recently been getting into Scotch, although I've always liked whiskey. Over the years, my taste has progressed something like this:

Generic cheap whisky -> Maker's Mark Bourbon -> Jameson Irish Whisky -> intro-level Scotch (Glenlivet 12 and Glenfiddich 12).

What's next?

SC,

Have you tried, I dunno, any of the numerous scotches El D mentioned in his OP, or any of those in the incredibly common scotch threads both here and in TLDR? Its not like those posts stop at intro or Glenlivet 12's.

Eh, I was kind of just fishing for a specific recommendation based on the stuff I've enjoyed before.

I realize I can scroll up and basically pick one of a dozen recommended scotches.

No biggie.

SC,

Try Macallan 10/12 or Balvenie 12 for a notch up on the smoothness and flavor scale. After that you'll probably want to try something peatier to see how you like that taste.

El D - Haven't seen you in TLDR lately, so if you haven't if you haven't seen it, look for the Best Value Spirits thread. Some amazing stuff coming off that list, especially in the Scotch catagory. I'd really like to see what your reviews are, but the Dalmore Cigar Malt has multiple reviews as amazing at $30-35/btl. And MrWookie went wild over an $18 bourbon.

Everyone else feel free to take a look, I don't think the list from Wine Enthusiast has had a clinker yet, in any catagory. I'm still looking for some tequila expert to try their recommendations.

How would you rank the Glenlivet and Glenfiddich against the Macallan 10 or 12 and the Balvenie 12?
