also, when i interviewed todd brunson he told me that he and his father check it down when it is just the two of them in a hand. is that team play, soft play, cheating, a father/son thing, or just a regular part of the game?

[/ QUOTE ]

it's soft play, but it affects the way hands are played out. knowing that its going to be checked down if it gets heads up changes the way you play the hand before it gets heads up - unless you're deliberately not playing to maximize your EV. it shouldn't be allowed (but there's not much you can do about it).

stinky,

"what's to stop a player from getting a new backer and skipping out on the "makeup"?"

That happens.

okay, next question:

say a player owes $150k in makeup. obviously he needs to win or come close to making any money. this changes his optimal strategy A LOT. probably to the point that the optimal strategy for him is no longer +EV for the backer. how do they deal with problems like this?

I don't know how many people Phil Ivey backs in tournies. I've heard he does quite a bit. I know he had (at least part of)the Grinder in the Five Diamond deal last week.

I thought the grinder is entered into all his events by whatever site sponsors him (and he does really well from the sponsorship deal alone).

That may be true. But he could also be low on money and offer X% to Ivey in return for X $. Or maybe they traded a % of eachother.

Ivey either had some or all of the Grinder or he was joking but it came from Ivey.
