Belize: All income derived from outside the country is tax free. You might need a puddle jumper to get in and out of the country though. The only problem is getting the capital out of the country.

I'm submitting a vote for staying put. This is from an old person who lost both grandmothers in 2006. Family sounds quite important to you, and it sounds like your grandmother depends on you. I suggest you work on your motivation and concentration and spend time with your grandmother, mom, and nephew while you can. The distractions you mention (video games, movies, etc.) will be present wherever you decide to move. The only thing helping your motivation will be a roomate who is living the same lifestyle as you. Have you tried setting a more formal schedule for playing and earning that is better suited to the goals you're establishing? |

Hey,
i`m prolly a bit younger than you (19), but i had a similar situation. I finished high school in germany in July 06 (~2years of college) and just wanted so see something new. I love to travel and because i have a dual citizenship (american, german) i said to myself: Go to Big Apple! So thats what i did and i really enjoy it here. There is so much to see and its never boring here. NYC is not the only city i could recommend you, but its worth a thought, since your familiy is not to far away and a weekend visit etc isn`t that big trip (in comparison to other places). As i moved i could have had a problem with jobs. Since its hard to earn a living out of my semi-pro-hobbies (chess and piano), some chess-friends introduced me to poker a few months ago (but they dont play it)...Now i have a job ...hopefully a 20year old could give you some ideas ...Since it seems like money isn`t the thing you are worrying about,(if i were you) i would just visit NYC and/or other cities for a weekend or two and look how life is there...Personally I planned to stay for a year in NYC and see how far i can make it in poker. After that year i`ll have a decision to make ...Do you have anybody in your family or friends, who know a bit about poker? I for example don`t have anybody to talk about poker, since i am the only one of my friends who does it. (Nobody to listen to bad beat stories *lol*). I think its a big advantage to have friends who play poker... Whatever you decide to do...gl and tell us |

If you are going to establish residency, consider a state with no state taxes.
Cali is very cool. There are at least a few places that have more than just a couple people you know and like (Toronto, Texas, Cali....?). You should visit each and then decide. Whether you want to stay with your family vs. just visiting when you can is too personal for anyone else to answer. |

Moving isn't going to get you to stop playing video games. Throw your TV/XBOX/whatever in the garbage. Seriously.
As for the family situation, there are plenty of close families who don't live together. You have to make the decision for you, not them. As for where to move, if you're on the way to 500K next year, I'd avoid taxes as much as possible. |

Two hours ago I told myself I was going to play a session. I'm still sitting here. Yes, family is important, but half the reason I play poker is to hopefully force my parents into some sort of cool retirement...and I don't think I can do that from Pittsburgh. |
