I really need to quit thinking about the time travel aspect of this show. I guess my ideas about space/time are different than a fictional writer's.

[/ QUOTE ]

It's a good idea to let it go. Any show or movie that involves time travel can become a hardcore mind-f**k if you think about it too much.

Semantic time-travel explanation:
Hiro can't change the past, but he can change the future. He initially went forward in time and saw the blast. Relative to his original location in time, the blast hasn't happened, so he can still change it. Had he travelled to the future and saw diner hottie die, he could have gone back and changed it.

Hiro can't change the past,

[/ QUOTE ]

Except he did change the past.

There's a photo of Hiro with the waitress, taken six months ago, that would not exist without Hiro's time travel powers.

That's not changing the past in a big way, but it is changing the past.

In addition, if Hiro can't change the past, why did future-Hiro travel into the past to talk to Peter on the subway?

Hiro's wrong, he's just frustrated by a coincidence - That the waitress also had a brain annurism as well as his lack of mastery over his powers (the accidental time jump).

We're not even sure, though, that the memorial in the restaurant is for the waitress as murdered by Sylar, not the waitress as victim of an aneurysm. I'm not sure, but I think there's a possibility that Hiro did in fact save her from Sylar, but not from her clot.

I disagree. Who is to say that Hiro wasn't part of the waitress' past? Him being there may have happened as it did the first time. The waitress did have the Japanese book and knew about Hiro's squinting before his travel back.

Him going back in the past already did happen in the past.

Hrm, that's a good point, except, what did he do then to save her? Did she use the ticket, go to Japan, die in Japan, the diner heard about it and did the memorial?

If she stayed it's pretty much inevitable Sylar got her. It didn't look like he set anything else in motion that would change things.

Then why didn't she recognise him as soon as he walked in the door (in the present time) with Ando? Or why didn't the rest of the staff? Why did nobody say, "Hey, Hiro, where the hell you been?"? They all just forget what he looks like? Why didn't the waitress know about her and Hiro's super-powers since Hiro seemed to convince her in the past with all the swans?

No, the timeline was obviously changed. In the "original past" she got the phrasebook elsewhere (maybe its part of the whole "You can't really (majorly) change the past" theme). Hiro goes into the past, makes some minor changes, fails to make the big change he wanted (If only one of the heroes was a healer like the 4400!) then accidentally teleports himself back to the present.

In Heroes the time travel rules are obvious fluid - If you go into the past now and make changes those changes weren't always there, including BEFORE you went back to make them. It's not yet clear though if the time traveller will remember the alternate pasts (ie: If Hiro would remember receiving a call from himself six months ago and also remember NOT receiving that phone call).

Or they just screwed up and don't really have a handle on all the time travel angles (like 90% of all tv time travel stories).

Hrm, I wonder if there's a shot of the memorial photos before Hiro goes back, so we could see if the photo's there or it only appears once he time jumps.

There is. He's not in the photo before he goes back, it's just the girl.

Yes there is!!

35:56, Episode 8. There's a shot of the photo, obviously on purpose, just before they wheel the body out. Hiro IS NOT IN THE PHOTO! Next the sherrif questions Ando and Hiro. Then Hiro jumps to the past. Later Ando notices the photo and Hiro is in it.

Case closed. Hiro did change the past. He wasn't in the photo originally. There are "alternate pasts". When you change the past, the change is only reflected in the post-time jump past. Not retroactively, before the time jump is even made.

Of course, all this is subject to change, particularly from sloppy writing.

Ie: If tomorrow I time travel into the past and meet myself I don't know about it already. Only once I do the time travel will I have changed the past and only them will I remember the meeting as having already taken place.

My only question is:

Since when is a multiple personalty disorder a super-power?

Or, Haitian dude shows up and wipes everyone's mind. It's plausible.

Either way, this show sucks for two reasons:

1) too many commercials

2) the hour goes by too quick.

Speaking of suck, Peter's brother is pretty much a smug [censored] who is straight denying his powers to everyone and everything, including himself. Don't be a smug ahole, Pete's bro. Embrace that [censored].
