Jesus Christ. If the cops are called to [censored] library to deal with someone who won't leave they are at least going to sit him down and question him. The fact that the kid wouldn't leave for the Student cop people but would leave once he realized that real cops were going to get involved proves how much of a douche he is. Cops are within thier rights to question him at that point, and he wouldn't comply. Taser his ass all night.

He was just working on something midterm related and forgot his student ID for crying out loud. |

[/ QUOTE ] on a college campus, it's ridiculously easy to differentiate the hobos they try to keep out versus students. Also, if he's typing a paper or research type pages (versus porn, games, etc) , it's a pretty clear sign he's a student. |

[/ QUOTE ] question, have you ever been in or near the UCLA library? secondly, its not the cops job to try to determine if he really is a student or not, they already gave him that oppurtunity (student ID). At that point, asking him to stand up doesn't seem like an infringement on his rights. |

Do they have reasonable suspicion that a crime has taken place? (trespassing argument is weak, he was obviously a student and on his way out) .. I really don't know how many times I can point this out. |

"Do they have reasonable suspicion that a crime has taken place?" uh yes, why else would they have been called to the library? |

How's about how many times you can point it out when your information is false? Firstly, he was asked to leave by CSO's to present his card. He actually HAD his card on him, and refused. At this point, they have due cause to believe he's a trespasser. Then, he refuses to leave for 10 minutes, until he sees the actual cops show up, then tries to make a break for it. The cops try to stop him, and the rest ensues.
And just because he's in there working on a paper doesn't make him a student there. He could be a student from anywhere(seen as i assume UCLA has superior facilities to a lot of places), in which case both the CSO's and cops are well within their rights to ask him to leave, seen as he refuses to prove otherwise, even though he has the means and the opportunity. |

The university owns the library and they make policies about who can enter. Students can enter of course, provided they abide by the policies, which he was not. The second he is asked to leave by the library officials and refusing he is trespassing. Did he expect the library to make an exception for him, "Na you don't need id, that's just a policy for everyone else"
While the cops did not HAVE to taser him (they could have removed him by carrying out) but they were within their rights to and frankly I'm glad they did. |
