[ QUOTE ]
Will it become the best Bond ever? I've heard others say that it might. Regardkess, I hope that they continue the trend of making it dark and shadowy like it should have been all along. I said for years that they needed to get someone like John Woo or David Fincher to direct one of these movies. If it's as good as you say, let's hope they keep it going. Can't wait to see it. [/ QUOTE ] Dark is the new black. Batman Begins went dark, spiderman 3 looks to be pretty dark and Casino Royale is dark. It appears hollywood is ready to let us see a tortured soul on screen when it comes to the major franchise films. As for best Bond ever, hmm. Im a Goldeneye fan, ie im more into the modern Bonds of my era. But i appreciate the older Bonds. Like i say, time will tell how loved Craig and Casino Royale will be, but its a step in the right direction if nothing else. Vespar asks him (and im paraphrasing here) at one point (also in trailer, so im consistant ) "how can you so calmly kill people", to which he responds "I wouldnt be very good at my job if i couldnt". This is really early on, after his first two kills. He racks up a fair few more by the end. |

I'm a huge Bond fan, have read all of Fleming's novels, seen the movies, etc. But I have not seen a "Bond" movie in the theater since "License To Kill". I'll be seeing this.

Dudes - Fleming's Bond in the novels was a stone cold killer. I thought Craig was an excellent choice for the role (based on "Road To Perdition" and "Layer Cake"), and I'm glad to see that they moved the character in that direction.

The stone cold killer comes across very well in Dr. No, when Bond sets up a guy to break into his hotel room, then after knocking the gun out of his hand basically sits and chats with him in order to lure him into making a hopeless grab for it when Bond knows it's empty. When the guy clicks on the empty chambers, Bond leisurely reaches over to a table, legs crossed, grabs his own gun, and brings it to bear on the terrified would-be killer. Bond says something on the order of "That's a Smith and Wesson K-frame. Your six are up," lets the hopelessness and terror sink in for a second and lets the guy agonize how he'd been set up by Bond all along, and then plugs a couple silenced rounds into him. Bond really dragged it out unnecessarily just to toy contemptuously with the guy. Because, well, that's just the kind of guy he was. Great, great scene! The old Connery Bond was not always a very nice guy at all. When he said he was going to break a girl's arm -- kind of a shocking thing to consider in the movies in those days especially -- you got the feeling the really meant it. There's a spark of absolute determination in Connery's eyes a lot, and I wouldn't want to get in his way. |
