I have to go with the LBJ daisy girl ad, probably the best piece of American warmongering propaganda ever, and a nice reminder that Democrats, given enough power, can be violent dictators of pointless wars too.

That first comment is great:
[ QUOTE ] Good thing they elected LBJ or that little girl would have had a nuclear bomb dropped on her. [/ QUOTE ] |

I think Willie Horton is right up there. The combination of the overtly silly charge and the subtle racist appeal make that one hard to beat. Kennedy's "Missle Gap" charge deserves a mention too because it was largely false.
And don't forget the Swifties. They created an entire political organization devoted to making [censored] up. |

That is a great one for the national spotlight but there are sooooooo many great ones at the local levels.
This is one of my personal favorites. http://nelson.sitebuilder.completeca...ia.php?id=6442 |

The 'best' part about the daisy ad was that Johnson was almost guaranteed to win in a landslide, given Kennedy's death less than a year before the election.
He really pulled out all the stops on taste and restraint. |
