One dish that does seem particular to Singapore is Pepper Crab which you see advertised everywhere. It is pretty delicious although fairly expensive.

that fridge full of souju is awesome

My brother lived in Singapore for a couple years and was in Korea often for his job.

The first time I had Korean food I called him to chat about it.

"Were you drunk off your ass on soju?" he asked.

"Uh...no," I admitted.

"Then you didn't have Korean food."

f2f,

I don't know if this is "authentic" at all, but Singaporean restaurants here are usually a sort of hybrid between Malay/Indian/Chinese food.

http://www.straitsrestaurants.com/

is a pretty good high-end one (I think 3 Bay Area locations now). There are plenty of cheaper ones that are really good.

my parents own a korean/japanese restaurant (brag) and i live within an hour from them. they have korean food, sushi, hibachi, alcohol, etc. i've only paid for sushi three times in my life... i will never go hungry.

some of the best customers are actually college kids who usually come in en masse on fri/sat. so it's certainly somewhat affordable. i don't think asians are cheap necessarily, they just may not believe in tipping. business is good because it's the basically the only korean food in town and the place is clean with good service.

all in all, it's good chit.

I spent 6 months in Korea in 2003. I did like the food quite a bit, but that [censored] soju did not agree with any part of my internal anatomy.

Some pics.

The 2nd picture has ggak-du-gi at the bottom in the middle. That stuff rules with soups, especially Ichiban Original Flavor Ramen.

Has anyone ever had a dish called something like giang-ja-rheem? Its like a boiled beef type dish that my ex's mom used to make for us when she visited? Never seen it in a restaurant and i miss it so much i've considered trying to get back w/ the psycho girl just for her mom's cooking
