I don't think you understand the demographics of poker if the non-poker jobs pay more than the poker playing.

Why would someone stay in a job, if it was paying significantly less than there poker earn?

Stability, tax purposes, health insurance, job security to placate a wife, relieve stress of needing to always win. Some of those reasons (like health insurance) are trivial to pay for, but the mental effect of not needing to book wins can actually make you a better player.

I have kept my job and I don't intend on that changing anytime soon. Basically, I really enjoy my job and I never have to do the same thing twice. Even though it's a huge paycut for me, the quality of life issues are most important. Plus, I'm not sure how much more poker I'd want to play than I already do, so I don't even know how much money I lose per year by actually working, (though it is significant).

What line of work are you in, if you don't mind me asking?

Physical Chemist doing nanotechnology research and development. I like the research more than the development.

I hope you won't regret it when you become older with higher expenses and responsibilities. I'm a Synthetic Chemist and I've always thought that doing research would always be so cool and who the hell cares for the big money. However when you are struggling to buy a house, to raise a family (not yet for me), to have a decent disposable income and on the other hand have society thinking that working for the pharma industry is unethical to say the least, then you start to have second thoughts.

I've gradually started losing my interest in science, first time since I know myself. I then discovered poker and ended up making more money than my real job (I'm NOT a high stakes player, just running hot...) I still enjoy my job and I still get excited when an experiment works etc. but without the extra income my life would be much different. Our society really sucks but that's the way it is.
