I was an A level outdoor doubles USVBA (volleyball) player.

What type of league is this and how competative are they?

Levels are generally, B, BB, A, AA, Open. Though many tournaments only have B, A, and Open otherwise the pools are too small.

How competitive? Hard to say. Not nearly as much as in California, I'm sure.

Most A players are good atheletes. Trim, can jump, hit the ball hard, etc. I'm not sure what frame of reference I could use that would make sense.

B level players would be the better players at drop in volleyball. Often B level players were either fat or had been A players that age caught up with, but were players that knew the game. Occasionally you'd get a good athelete that didn't know volleyball well and their inconsistency lands them in B.

A level players know position on court, use blocking signs/signals, can play the whole court, jump serve, etc. A players almost never play drop in, the level just isn't good enough to be interesting. Or if they did, all of them go to the same drop in place so the competition is decent and lesser players shy away from it and go elsewhere.

I had a hard jump serve, I passed decently and set very well, and played good defense. I could absolutely crush the ball when hitting. However, I'm short and can't jump relative to good A players so working around the block of a good player was hard for m. And my hitting lacked accuracy and relied on raw power. My cut shot sucked.

How often do these tourneys run? Is there significant money in them? Thanks for the info BTW, not too often you see another vball player on here.

For doubles, they'd run 10-20 in a summer, depends on if you play just men's doubles, or reverse coed, or quads, etc. Tournies are all day events. Typically 3-6 games in pool play in the morning, games to 15 or 11 (old school scoring, not rally) depending on the number of matches.

Then lunch break and you're seeded for double elimination. First round is often 2 out of 3 games, games to 11. If there's alot of entrants, just one game to 15.

Money? Not at A/B levels. If you win you usually got town, shirts, lawn chair, a new volleyball, maybe a volleyball net, $20 gift certificate to something or other. It was usually $40-50 for a team to play, so there wasn't much money in the pool. The money largely went to run the tourney.

In the the open divisions you could make money, though usually not in a USVBA tourney, but some other tourney locall (PacNova runs a big one every july 4th). There, top prize could be $1500 or some such and you'd get teams that would travel in from out of state to play.
