Attendance per game more than doubled between 2002 and 2004. I'd say that's a fairly significant increase. Their attendance was likely bad (comparatively) this year because most baseball fans, especially casual fans, saw their trades as another firesale.

Edit: Again, I'm not saying they're good fans, but to try to attribute most or all of the blame on the fans just seems faulty to me.
