In the same way that in some countries the Malvinas are called the Falkland, in some coutries americans refer to people from the americas and US citizens refer to those spcifically from that nation. Personally I prefer the latter usage, as more accurate.

Australia being a continent has not got a similar confusion. Europeans on the other hand is a term that can be as vague as american in its usage. To some it doesn't include the eastern countries, oters may say that the UK is not part of it and there is a tremendous debate going on as to whether or not Turkey should be included.

It is ok for you not to see yourself as an american but I have countless friends from South America who see themselves as americans but definitely are not even interested in being associted with the US citizenry per se.
