Default A Reply from George Allen

I just got an email from Senator George Allen [VA]. Not surprisingly he raised the point that certain underage children might go on-line and gamble. My reply to that was, "What about all the children that accidentally get shot when playing around with their father's guns?" Being a big conservative and I'm sure a member of the NRA, maybe he'll think twice about using that arguement. But I doubt it. He's got to pander to Virginians like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson.

THat kind of argument doesn't work with evangelicals and Allen's base is full of them. The bible clearly supports guns and clearly bans poker*, and that's all they care about.

* Oh wait, it doesn't say anything about either, but that's besides the point.

I would have liked a "well we need to protect our kids from porn but we arent making that illegal" line. but I think at this point we shouldnt be holding anything back.

oh no, then the bible thumpers would switch their energy to banning porn instead of oh I don't know important stuff like keeping us safe from terrorists or balancing the never ending debt. Guess saving us from ourselves is more important right now.

I am a christian and see nothing wrong with online poker. I see absolutely no difference in risking your money playing poker and risking it trying to make it as a business owner. 95% OF ALL BUSINESSES FAIL WITHIN 5 YEARS, WHEREAS ONLY 66% OF POKER PLAYERS LOSE MONEY.

Default The correct answer is:

That's exactly why we should be REGULATING (and taxing) the industry. What Congress is currently considering would not stop people from gambling on-line. To the extent there are issues like underage gambling associated with the activity, the ONLY sensible answer is to enact clear regulations to miinimize those problems. Under the proposed legislation there will be no standards governing the behavior of internet gambling sites and the problems the Senator mentions will not disappear, they will only be pushed further underground, which will probably make them worse.
