[ QUOTE ] Why do you think the Civil Rights Act is an unjust law? [/ QUOTE ] Because who I choose to associate with or trade with is nobody else's business. [/ QUOTE ] The Civil Rights Act doesn't regulate who you choose to associate or trade with....it does, however, regulate whom you can choose to discriminate against when hiring, based solely on their skin color, their religion, or their gender, etc. If you honestly believe it is unjust that people from all races should be treated equal, then I don't know what else to tell you, other than maybe you were born a few hundred years too late, boss. |

Redbean,
You seem to have some serious reading comprehension issues. What do you think hiring someone is, other than trading (time for money) and association? Where did you read once that pvn stated that he thinks it is acceptable to discriminate based on race (although he may agree, I certainly would discriminate against all white and female actors trying out for the lead in The Mike Tyson Story). Those of us who disagree with the Civil Rights Act usually condemn such things, but we condemn FORCING OTHER PEOPLE to live by these criteria to be even worse. |

[/ QUOTE ] So tell me, hoss, since you got such a good grip on this reading comprehension thing....who is the law forcing you to hire? See, that's the thing....it's not FORCING you to hire anyone, one group over the other. It simply outlines that you cannot openly and intententionally discriminate against anyone....which for some reason doesn't sit well with you. Does it bug you that everyone should be treated equal under the law when it comes to employment opportunity? And speaking of reading comprehension, do you understand the difference between forcing you to hire someone, and not allowing you to discriminate against a certain group? There is a difference, and it's a mighty big one, and if you apply that reading comprehension you're so fond of-- you *might* just be able to pick up on it. |

The law is interfering with my choices in who I can associate and trade with.
I have a problem with that. Your reading comprhension skills (or lack thereof) are showing once again. I never once said anyone was forced to hire anyone. I said it interfered with my ability to make choices. |

The law is interfering with my choices in who I can associate and trade with. I have a problem with that. [/ QUOTE ] The law only interferes with who you can *discriminate* against. Why do you have a problem with that? How does a law that requires you to treat everyone *equally* interfere with your choices? Is it your intention to treat one race or religion with prejuidice, thus that motive is now being interfered with due to a law that requires you to treat them each equally? [ QUOTE ] Your reading comprhension skills (or lack thereof) are showing once again. I never once said anyone was forced to hire anyone. I said it interfered with my ability to make choices. [/ QUOTE ] So you think businesses should have the ability to openly and intentionally discriminate on the basis of color, religion, and gender? Is that seriously what you think? Maybe I'm missing something here....are you coming at this from some wacky racist angle, or are you one of the ACers who is just against any kind of law that might restrict your complete and utter freedoms, even when it comes to allowing open and intentional discrimination? |

Does it bug you that everyone should be treated equal under the law when it comes to employment opportunity? [/ QUOTE ] Everyone (oh, except for labor buyers). Why is buying labor different than buying hotdogs? Can I discriminate when buying art? Picking a photographer for my wedding? Hiring a guy to clean my house or mow my lawn? Am I buying a service or hiring an employee? What about my brother-in-law who I hired to install my hardwood floors? I treated him quite differently than every other floor installer. Sin or not? |
