If he had returned one hand later than he did (ie if he missed exactly 1 orbit or exactly 2 orbits and came back right at his SB instead of his BB) would he be allowed to continue playing immediately without any extra posting?

[/ QUOTE ] No, because you can't come into a game in the Small Blind. In this case he would have to wait until the button passed him and then post dead (BB and SB).

[/ QUOTE ] If the cardroom in question allows you to "buy the button" you can post BB+SB in the SB position and get the last action preflop. The following hand, you get the button and play continues normally.

At MCC they used to give you a button for every round of blinds missed. After coming back in the big blind, one dealer tried to make me post every hand thereafter until all my buttons were gone.
