To all vegetarians who are primarily vegetarians because of the way animals are treated,
"Would you rather eat fruits and vegetables that involved cruelty to humans basically working in bonded servitude or eat some meat that involved some poor conditions for animals but good conditions for all human workers involved?" |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Paluka, My point was simple. They are animals, dude. Nothing wrong with eating animals. That's what people do. [/ QUOTE ] el diablo, they're colored, dude. nothing wrong with enslaving, beating and hanging the coloreds. that's what white people do. there are lots of animals that have more intelligence and even compassion than some retarded people. should we go around eating retarded people simply because we can? this argument about the food chain holds no water for me. [/ QUOTE ] Ridiculous, inflammatory analogy, followed by nonsensical, insane analogy. Nice work. [/ QUOTE ] why do you think this is a ridiculous analogy? arguing that something is right because "that's just the way things are done 'round here boy" is ridiculous. i think people have the right to eat meat if they want but they should admit to themselves they they do it because they want to and not out of necessity (a vegetarian diet is completely feasible for most americans) and hopefully they're conscious of what kind of conditions the animals live in before the meat magically appears on their plate. i really don't understand why people find vegetarians so weird. most people have had pets and they would never consider eating their pets. being vegetarian is not much of a leap beyond that. |

Diablo,
Unrealistic hypotheticals are not worth asking seriously. They are only useful to start long, strange and funny threads. |

[ QUOTE ]
Everyone is a hypocrite. Its just a matter of how much hypocrisy each person is willing to accept. [/ QUOTE ] Max, This is wrong. There is a big difference between not being able to be completely consistent in one's beliefs and conduct and being an out and out hypocrite. Life oftne forces compromises on us whether we like it or not. Ethical vegetarians such as myself sometimes are forced into compromises (e.g., I try to eschew leather products and wear non-leather shoes on the weekend; however, I have been unable to find non-leather shoes that really satisfy my businesses dress code so I wear leather shoes during the week with my suits (which I would also prefer not to wear, but for other reasons)). For any set of ethical values, not just vegetarianism, one might encounter conflicts that cal for compromise. But that is different from hypocrisy where one professes to do one thing and advocates that others do the same while having no intention to conform to the professed code of conduct. |
