[/ QUOTE ] This seems like the most painfully obvious point ever to understand, but apparantly it is like pulling teeth. Not to mention the fact those series' weren't close to going 7 games. In the future whenever I slam the Dolphins in the fall, I will be sure to take a page from the Triumph playbook and preface it with a "I was pulling for them" comment just to pretend like I don't have an axe to grind. |

Those injuries were irreplacable. Do you think you can just replace players like Kim Johnsson, Keith Primeau, and Dominik Hasek? Johnsson is a top 40 D in the league and probably better than anyone the Sabres skate out there on a regular basis, Keith Primeau was absolutely lights out in the 04 playoffs, playing phenomenal two-way hockey, and Dominik Hasek is certainly better than Ray Emery. Do you think Hasek loses Game 1 of the ECSF the way Emery did?
The Flyers replaced Keith Primeau with Petr Nedved - think before you post. I was pulling for the Sabres in Game 7 - you guys still think you're the only team that had any injuries. The fact that Regier could've gotten a veteran D so at least he could've had 4 guys who are capable of taking an NHL shift makes it even worse. The Sabres might have won the series without injuries, they might not have - they probably would have. But who knows about the other series. |

[/ QUOTE ] Blaming Darcy for not going out and getting a veteran defensemen who wouldnt have cracked the top 6 is wrong. None of the available guys would have cracked the lineup and they felt comfortable with Rory, who had been in Bufflao essentially all year. Had only Kalinin went down, the team would have been in fine shape. They lost 3 more after him and thems the breaks. |

"Think before you post". Because I'm the one saying 1 guy > 5 guys? Do you have a straight face when you type this stuff?
Think Carolina would be in this series if Ward, Hedican, and Commodore went out to be replaced by Andrew Hutchinson (18 games of NHL experience, none this season), Anton Babchuk (5 games of NHL experience), and Oleg Tverdovsky (hasn't skated a shift in the NHL since the 2003 season)? What about Edmonton replacing Jason Smith, Chris Pronger, and Staios with Danny Syvret (no PROFESSIONAL experience), Matt Roy (no NHL experience), and Igor Ulanov (hasn't skated in the NHL this season)? Or the Ducks losing Niedermeyer, Beauchamin, and Ruslan Salei and instead suiting up: Jason Marshall (journeyman who has played a grand total of 47 NHL games in the last 3 league seasons), Brett Skinner (zero games of NHL experience), and some forward because they only have EIGHT defensemen on their postseason roster? No team carries enough troops to lose 3 blueliners. Your constant pounding of this issue is a joke and I'm done with it. |

A lot of teams go into the playoffs 8 deep. Tampa (Cullimore, Kubina, Sarich, Boyle, Sydor, Lukowich, Pratt, Neckar) and New Jersey (Rafalski, Stevens, Niedermayer, White, Daneyko, Albelin, Tverdovsky, Smehlik) did as the last 2 Cup Winners.
Jersey went in 8 deep again this year and used all 8 defensemen. You may be right that bringing in a guy and then not playing him isn't sensible, but I do know that that guy would be better than Rory Fitzpatrick who is one of the worst regular defensemen in the NHL. |

No, obviously not - whatever, the Sabres are the only team that's ever had any injuries ever, and they're the unluckiest team in sports history - all the teams they played were completely flawless. Now let me go watch Buffalo '66 while softly crying the whole time.
The Sabres didn't play the 5th and 6th defensemen anyway - they were going with 4 defenders most of the game. 5 and 6 could've been anyone. |

It gets absurd when the names Niedermayer and Pronger are anywhere near this discussion -
My point is fairly simple: if Buffalo had another veteran, they could've played 4 defenders 27 minutes of the game and left the other 6 to scrubs like Jillson and Janik, instead of having to play Janik 23 minutes or whatever he ended up playing. I am not saying they should be 10 deep, obviously. The Sabres played remarkably to even force a Game 7 with those kinds of injuries - I was especially impressed with Toni Lydman, who has really come a long way this season playing on the top pairing, and was a great acquisition before the season by Darcy Regier. Still, my point is that injuries are a part of the game, and no one knows what would've happened if every team went into every series healthy. I'm done with making this point - either it's understood or it isn't. |
