Well Gale's quote about himself and the Others being the "good guys" leads me to believe there are some bad guys out there. Maybe these Russians are said badguys and are looking for them?

I guess it could also go with some people's theories that they need the good people (good at heart) to do something special.

Desmond seems to tell the truth and should have made it to somewhere other than the island. So if he sailed for 2+ weeks he should have gone somewhere. Some how it's impossible to get away from the island unless you know the correct exit.

Here's a post from another board that has a better explanation:

Desmond sailed due east for two weeks and came back to the island.

Michael had to sail on a specific heading to escape the island, then wouldn't be able to come back if he wanted to.

That's huge, the island is somehow blocked out from the rest of the world. We've kinda been given the impression that it was being hidden for a reason or that no one else on the outside knew anything about it.

Now we know that the island is being sought after, that people are looking for it. That's huge. It means a lot.

Maybe the time they missed pushing the button on time and the hieroglyphics came up was enough to pull Desmond's boat back.
