Default Traveling abroad. Where do you stash your passport/important items?

I have a fanny pack from high school but it blatantly screams "tourist". I considered getting a small traveling kit and keep it inside my backpack, but people tell me that this is not safe. I am going to Asia, where I guess pickpockets and such are more common than in Europe.

Should I invest in one of those pouches you strap to your body for my passport/cash? Is this overkill?

I'd recommmend that pouch. You feel stupid at first but you get used to it very quickly and don't feel it after a while. I had a small pouch only for my passport and a few hundred USD for emergencies.

So you wore a fanny pack on your waist in plain view with your emergency money in it? Hmmm.... Smart Thinking, this way if you get mugged or robbed, you will still have the emergency money.

It's called a money belt, and no it is not overkill. Keep the bulk of your cash and your ID and other documents in your money belt.

If you go somewhere really dangerous, put 1 $100-bill or a big local bill in your shoe and remember the phone number to your embassy. That will be enough to manage even if somebody steals all your other possesions.

I'm pretty sure he was continuing to use the distinction the OP made between fanny pack and pouch.
