Intro/Review #1 Arctic Monkeys
Destroyer – Destroyer’s Rubies Destroyer is led by the unique and almost haunting at times voice of Dan Bejar, also of the New Pornographers. Their latest album, Destroyer’s Rubies, offers a mix of slow rock, with a few more upbeat tracks, topped off with the witty lyrics of Bejar. For an example, you need look no further than the song “A Dangerous Woman Up to a Point”, where you’ll find the line, “Have I told you lately that I love you? Did I fail to mention there’s a sword hanging above? And those who love Zeppelin, will soon betray Floyd” The slower rock songs almost slow down to the level of jam band at times, such as the song “Sick Priest Learns to Live Forever”. However, the real standouts of this album are the songs where Destroyer kicks up the beat a little in songs like “In Your Blood” and “3000 Flowers”. The lighter rock songs of this album are good, but these songs stick out from the rest so greatly it makes you wish that Destroyer would have included a few more of this type of song in the album to balance things out more equally. Despite this, Destroyer’s Rubies is an album you will find endlessly spinning through your playlist. It’s catchy at times, witty at others, but overall brilliant. It is without a doubt one of the best albums of the year, so far. Rating: 8.8/10 Scale 1 – Please destroy all copies of this album so that I don’t have to ever go through listening to this again 2 – Lacks anything good to say about it, but at least it doesn’t put me in pain to hear it 3 – Shows some bright signs, but overall lacks enough good content 4 – A below average entry, lacks uniqueness and relistenability 5 – Average, entertaining at times, but overall nothing special 6 – Slightly Above Average, entertaining with decent relistenability 7 – Above Average, very entertaining 8 – Great Overall Album 9 – One of the Year’s best, Nearing all time Great Status 10 – An Absolutely Perfect Album in every way Tomorrow: Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood |

I enjoyed the album, but not nearly as much as Your Blues. Nothing on Rubies really grabbed me quite as much as It's Gonna Take an Airplane or The Music Lovers.

[/ QUOTE ] Yeah, I think I like Your Blues more. Also, I just listened to the Maritime album and recommend it to anyone who likes Indie Rock. If you guys want a review proper, I'll bang one out and post it in this thread. |
