Totally second this idea. I have a vacation home there and even though its a lot of fun in the summer with all of the people and excitement, I enjoy going even more in the fall. The beaches are spectacular and some of the seasonal restaurants/hangouts are still open (they open in early june and close in september or october). Taking a walk on the beach alone at night is one of my favoritie activities. If you decide to look into this further PM me or post in this thread and I can give you some detailed recs.

Another vacation I thought of was Napa Valley, CA. Totally awesome scenery, tons of bed and breakfast type places, and close enough to SF that you could do a day trip or two in there. There are also a bunch of national parks/moutain ranges within driving distance.
