I understand exactly what you're saying. I just disagree.

Something like "Hey, are you guys drinking cosmos? Yes. OK, quick question for you - do you think it's sorta gay if a guy drinks cosmos at a bar?" is going to work just fine.

"I have seen this happen to my wings and had it happen to me as well, without using canned mystery openers."

That probably has more to do with you guys than the show. Do you guys stick to a script and make sure you do things like get a "false time constraint" in the first part of the conversation?
