I'm thinking when my sons get to be a certain age (what age?!), I'm going to send them to some of these seminars or buy the appropriate reading materials, so they don't have to have the same crappy experience I had. Am I deranged?

Don't do that. Just raise him to be confident and willing to speak his opinion and be talkative. If you're going to force something on him, make it a Martial Art or something else that builds self-esteem.
