The term started in England after that Braveheart fellow caused all that trouble for them. The English looked down on the Scottish, the phrase originally was used when some one did something or said something that you did not expect them to capable of doing or saying, like who would have thought a bunch of ass backward Scots could give the English such a hard time. However, in modern times, the Scots find it to be derogatory and insulting so the phrase has lost its popularity as Scots have been known to give random beat downs when they hear it being used.
