You are right, not everyone is a crazed murderer, etc. Except it's relatively uncommon for criminals to come into an OCCUPIED house, pull guns, and threaten peoples lives and rob them. The "normal" criminal hits an empty house and steals a few things. Once they come in and threaten to kill people in a full house, you are dealing with a different class of criminal.

You have a criminal you don't know, pointing a gun at your friend. Personally I wouldn't even ask him to drop his gun, I'd just shoot him, so give the friend a little credit for trying to end the situation peacefully. Once the robber refuses, you shoot. You don't think about it, or talk about it with the robber. You shoot him. Once the guns are out you had better be willing to freaking use it.

We have had a few home invasion robbers in my town and it isn't long until they murder someone, rape someone, injure someone, etc. So IMO, good riddance. Too bad he didn't kill the other one though.
