[ QUOTE ]
This is really an argument less about the type of movie and more about the directing. Some here have argued that it doesn't matter who directed Transformers...its just a dumb movie about robots who fight so who [censored] cares as long as it looks cool. That is the problem I have...even a dumb movie about robots can be [censored] unreal if the director does a great job. Michael Bay is not that type of director...but as long as people are fine with just getting special effects n [censored] blowing up...there will be fewer and fewer "great" summer movies that go beyond just being special effects cuz studios have learned that they don't need to bother...people will settle for less. hence FF4, Silver Silver, Xmen3, etc etc [/ QUOTE ] Yup, true, and as an example, I'll bring up a movie I've already brought up in this thread: Robocop. I think almost nobody expected much of this flick, and it blew everybody away. It was honestly touching, the action scenes were put together incredibly well, the villains were not completely cardboard but had interesting, distinct personalities, and it was funny as hell and often viciously funny. All that from a friggin robot movie? What the ...? When you've got moviemakers who really give a damn and have some talent, an ordinary thrill movie can take a huge, huge leap up from being some goofy forgettable fun to blowing away everyone from wide-eyed schoolkids to grizzled sneery snobs. And you can not something fairly watchable once, but watchable again and again even by people who aren't fans of that type of movie. (And those repeat viewings drive ticket sales, DVD purchases, DVD rentals, and cable buys too.) There's plenty of reason to do the best job you can. |
