Default *** uNL Session Reviews ***: group list & instructions

Groups

here are the final groups for this round of uNL session reviews. If you think you've signed up, please check that and then pm the person at the top of your group with your email address. If I've missed you off, pm me asap!

As I said in the other thread, I'm very pleased by the turnout: these groups are all pretty strong. I'd estimate the ratio is about 3:1 solid+ players:newbies in each group. Also every group member should have at least one person in the group who is experienced at similar or higher stakes to them (except for the $100nl players and even then it's close). So well done uNL, that should make the experience good for everyone.

people at the top of groups ('group leaders'), once everyone's pmed you their email address email everyone, probably with your session and you can get cracking. You can organise it how you like, but I'd be looking to get everyone's session reviewed in <2 weeks. If you don't get a pm from everyone within a couple of days, pm them yourself. If they don't respond to that, pm me and we'll discuss what to do if your group is unbalanced. Thanks for your help.

tips for session reviews

there are lots of ways you can get people to see your session. if you're sending hands 100-150 is about the right number.

Videos
these are fun and pretty easy to make using Camtasia. since it's a session review hopefully people will take a lot of notes and give good comments. Videos should be an hour long max. I suggest you don't multitable insanely - 4 or less is probably a good idea, and commentary is >>> no commentary.

Upload the session to the internet
You could use a site like http://www.tensevensuited.com/reviewer/index.php to host your hand histories in an easy to review format. You'll be able to see the notes from all members of your group side by side. If you're worried about other people seeing your hands you can limit access to just your group. I haven't used it yet, but it looks pretty good.

Pokerhand.org might be another site to try.

Poker Tracker
Replaying the hands in PT helps you to see the pot size clearly and the stats on villains. If you want people to review your session in PT the best way might be to email your reviewing pals the session as a PT database:

"go to the Session Notes tab and pick out a session or two. Double click on a session to select it (Ctrl+double click to select more than one, ctrl+double click on a session again to deselect), then once you got 1 or 2 sessions highlighted, go to Game Notes tab and click the Get All button (top right). You should have ~200 hands only from your selected sessions. Use the Export… button to save them to a text file."

then start a new database and import the hands. Then send the database (found in your Poker Tracker folder) by email. People then just have to put the db in their PT folder and it will automatically find it.

Then "go to Preferences and set your name as your review buddy. Then, find your review buddy’s name and select the session(s) he sent you (you might have additional hands on them, so make sure you filter those out). Go to Game Notes, display all hands, sort by Game # in ascending order. Click the first hand #, click the “Playback This Hand…” button. You should be able to see their hole cards.

"Use the controls on bottom left to play through the hand, use the leaf of paper icon next to each player to take game-specific notes, use the sigma icon to check their stats (just take into account the fact that your buddy won’t have those stats available to them at the start of the session, if their stats affect the way you’d play the hand, mention in your text file that had you known his stats, you might have played the hand differently). When you’re done with the hand, use the controls on top left to go to the next hand.

"As you look through the hands, make sure you at least scroll through the folded hands. Take notes on the villains. If you rarely take notes during play (like me), here’s your chance to practice."

then the reviewer can send the db back to the player and they can read all the notes within PT.

This has the disadvantage that it's difficult for the other group members to see other reviews, but if there's disagreement about a specific hand that can be shared within the group or posted on 2p2.

If it's too complicated to send a database, just export your session as a text file following the instructions above, then email it to the reviewers. They can then import the hand histories, and the follow the directions above, except that they have to make notes in a separate text editor, identifying the hand by # or hole cards.

The old fashioned way
If you can't manage any of these methods you'll just have to do this:

"Make your comments directly on the hand history file (in a different color so they stand out). Then email the whole file back to your partner. The benefit of this method is that partners can send the document back and forth and make several rounds of comments if they choose."

The big disadvantage is it's not easy to see pot odds, villain stats etc.

more tips

for more tips on session reviews, one of the minibet forums has this great FAQ.
I quoted the PT text from Grunch/MikeyPatriot

Fees, a 200NL player and respected poster, has kindly offered to review uNL video sessions. PM him to share your vids!

final comments

I'd be interested to hear feedback about how the review sessions went. Feel free to send me a pm with comments once it's all finished. I might then post feedback to uNL (without revealing any identities of course) so that future session reviews can be better.

If you missed out this time sorry about that: the best answer is to be proactive and organise the next round!

In the meantime, everyone who signed up - have fun!
