GameCube controllers are necessary to play GameCube games (you also need a GameCube memory stick). Any NES games allow you to use the Wiimote. For others, GameCube controllers work ok, but the Virtual Controller is far superior for most SNES games (and some N64 games as well). Kinda sucks, but if you're planning on playing a lot of Virtual Console games then the Virtual Controller is probably worth it.
