That number is for three 4x8 planks of cabinet grade plywood. I believe they were $35 each at Home Depot. Since I was doing a racetrack and you will see the actual plywood... I went with the best grade available.

Everything is also more expensive in NYC than out in the sticks... so that would probably factor in as well.

Do all three planks need to be cabinet grade? It would seem that only one of the three needs to be because only one will be showing. The rest are all covered, correct?

Built mine out of a sheet of 3/4" OSB, and a 3/4" sheet of stain grade plywood. weighs a freakin ton, and its REALLY solid. you don't see the OSB. Using a sheet of OSB closer to a half inch will still provide plenty of support. My total cost was about $250, with fabric and padding costing around 100 of it.
